Is Flossing still Important?

February 8, 2017

In recent times there has actually been some controversy, is Flossing still important? Some professionals maintain that cleaning between teeth does nothing for overall oral health. However, the American Dental Association disagrees. They maintain that flossing actually cleans bio-particles that if left lodged between teeth will actually build into plaque in the long run. There are several other organizations that agree with them including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

According to these professionals, flossing once a day is the standard, preferably after every meal but at least once a day at night before you fall asleep. As a matter of fact, falling asleep overnight with the plaque in between your teeth is one of the main reasons that plaque will eventually harden into calculus or tartar. In the long run, this tartar can result into cavities and gum disease.

The New Year is here and now is a great time to address what are the best practices when it comes to your oral health. So as many of us are looking to start the year off to a healthy start, what are some concrete things we can do to include a healthy smile as part of your New Year goals. One of the first things to keep in mind is that most dental insurance will begin again at the beginning of the year. Make sure you are familiar with your plan and understand what your coverage actually consists of. Most plans offer two cleanings a year. The beginning of the year is when most people schedule their first cleaning coming off of the holidays. This is also a good time to have a general oral check up and to see where your oral health is at.

If you haven’t already, the beginning of the year is s good time to start incorporating healthy dental practices.  We’ve all been told that one of the most important things we can do to prevent tooth decay is to floss and brush consistently. If you are not doing so currently, you should start. Flossing removes the bacteria that leads to tartar build up and gets in between those teeth that brushing misses.
